Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan responds to Captain Brijesh Chowta\u2019s Rule 377 intervention; ICAR-CPCRI undertaking research, field demonstrations and disease-management measures<\/p>\n
Mangaluru, August 22: Issues related to diseases affecting arecanut cultivation in the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka are being addressed through scientific research, field surveys and integrated disease-management measures, Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has said in a communication to Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta.<\/p>\n
The communication, issued in response to a matter raised by Mr. Chowta under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, details the measures being undertaken by the ICAR-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CPCRI), Kasaragod, to address major diseases affecting arecanut plantations.<\/p>\n
Mr. Chouhan said research and field-level interventions were being undertaken for diseases including fruit rot (Mahali\/Koleroga), yellow leaf disease and leaf spot disease. Field demonstrations of recommended integrated disease-management practices across seven clusters, including Belthangady and Sullia, have shown a reduction in disease severity following their adoption, the Minister said.<\/p>\n
For fruit rot, locally known as Mahali or Koleroga, prophylactic management practices involving the timely application of recommended fungicides before and during the monsoon have been developed. Field studies have indicated a reduction in disease incidence and improvement in yield following their adoption.<\/p>\n
Research is also being undertaken on yellow leaf disease, including disease management and the development of healthy planting material. Integrated management practices are being demonstrated in farmers\u2019 fields in areas with relatively low disease incidence, with support from the Directorate of Arecanut and Spices Development.<\/p>\n
The Ministry has also taken note of leaf spot disease reported from major arecanut-growing districts, particularly Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru and Uttara Kannada.<\/p>\n
A National Scientific Committee on Arecanut, constituted in November 2022, had examined the issue and recommended an integrated disease-management strategy based on field surveys, consultations with farmers and stakeholders, and scientific assessment.<\/p>\n
The recommended practices are being demonstrated in affected areas under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH). The seven clusters referred to by the Ministry cover areas including Sirsi, Siddapur, Belthangady and Sullia, where the demonstrations have shown a reduction in disease severity after adoption of the recommended practices.<\/p>\n
The Minister said effective management of leaf spot disease required coordinated adoption of recommended practices across adjoining plantations. Community-based disease management, field demonstrations, farmer awareness and dissemination of scientifically validated practices were therefore being emphasised.<\/p>\n
Mr. Chouhan assured that ICAR-CPCRI, Kasaragod, would continue its scientific research and provide technical support and necessary assistance for management of major arecanut diseases, with the objective of improving the productivity and sustainability of arecanut cultivation and protecting the livelihoods of farmers in the coastal and Malnad regions of Karnataka.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
