Long-pending demand pursued consistently since June 2024 now approved by Railway Board<\/p>\n
Mangaluru, August 21, 2026: The sustained efforts of Dakshina Kannada MP Captain Brijesh Chowta have borne fruit, with the long-pending demand to bring the Mangaluru railway region under a single administrative jurisdiction now approved by the Railway Board. The Mangaluru area up to Ullal, inclusive, will be transferred from the Palakkad Division of Southern Railway to the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway, with the change coming into force from October 1, 2026.<\/p>\n
The development is expected to significantly ease administrative and jurisdictional hurdles faced by Mangaluru, improve coordination, enable faster resolution of passenger and operational concerns, and facilitate a more focused push for railway infrastructure and connectivity across coastal Karnataka.<\/p>\n
Captain Chowta has pursued the demand consistently since taking office in June 2024. Within weeks of taking oath, he raised the issue during the first visit of Minister of State for Railways Shri V. Somanna to Mangaluru on July 17, 2024, at a high-level review meeting on regional railway infrastructure and connectivity.<\/p>\n
The matter was followed up at multiple levels. On November 28, 2024, Captain Chowta submitted representations seeking the reorganisation of the Mangaluru Railway Administration and its inclusion under the Mysuru Division of South Western Railway to Railway Board Chairman Shri Satish Kumar, MoS Railways Shri V. Somanna and Union Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw.<\/p>\n
The issue was also repeatedly pursued in Parliament. On December 11, 2024, Captain Chowta raised the inclusion of Mangaluru Central and Mangaluru Junction under SWR through a supplementary question in the Lok Sabha. During the Demands for Grants discussion for Railways in March 2025, he further broadened the issue, calling for structural reorganisation of the coastal railway network and specifically seeking the reorganisation of Mangaluru\u2019s railway administration from Southern Railway\/Palakkad to SWR\/Mysuru.<\/p>\n
The demand continued to be followed up through subsequent parliamentary interventions, representations and repeated meetings with the Railway Ministry. The sustained efforts were aimed at addressing the difficulties arising from Mangaluru\u2019s railway administration being spread across multiple jurisdictions.<\/p>\n
Welcoming the Railway Board\u2019s decision, Captain Chowta said, \u201cThis gives me a great sense of contentment, particularly because this was a demand we raised within days of taking oath as your MP and have pursued consistently since then. I am grateful to Hon\u2019ble Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw for his proactive engagement and responsiveness in taking forward this long-pending demand.\u201d<\/p>\n
Captain Chowta also thanked Hon\u2019ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw and Minister of State for Railways Shri V. Somanna for their support in enabling the decision.<\/p>\n
The move will bring greater administrative coherence to Mangaluru\u2019s railway operations. With the region earlier falling under different railway jurisdictions, addressing several infrastructures, operational and passenger-related concerns involved navigating multiple administrative structures. Bringing the Mangaluru area under SWR\u2019s Mysuru Division is expected to streamline coordination and decision-making and enable more effective resolution of local railway concerns.<\/p>\n
As per the Railway Board\u2019s order, the SWR\u2013Southern Railway interchange point will also shift from Padil to Ullal, while Thokur will continue to remain part of Konkan Railway and serve as the interchange point between KRCL and SWR.<\/p>\n
The jurisdictional changes will come into force from October 1, 2026.<\/p>\n
Captain Chowta said the decision would help Mangaluru move forward with greater administrative clarity and a stronger focus on railway development.<\/p>\n
